Rumours are rife that if Real Madrid seal the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, then Robinho will be allowed to leave for Chelsea, but would it be a worthwhile trade?
It is widely suggested that Real Madrid's debts would force them into selling a player if they bought the Portuguese, while the club claim that the player's merchandising in and of itself would recover the vast amounts shelled to lure him to the Santiago Bernabéu.
The dilemma now facing Madrid is as simple as it is incredibly complicated: who should stay, who should go and who should come? Should Ronaldo arrive at the expense of Robinho, there is little doubt he will deliver results. The former Sporting star is far stronger playing on the right than Robinho, a position proving something of a missing link for los Merengues as things stand. He has proven himself to a greater extent, and though question marks remain whether such phenomenal form as he had last season is sustainable, along with whether it will be made as easy in Spain, few would question his superior calibre to the Brazilian.
