Arsenal began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Barnet at Underhill on Saturday afternoon.

The Bees surprised everyone when they snatched an early goal through a delightful free-kick from Kenny Gillet on 15 minutes that curled around the opposing wall and into the corner of the net.

Two second-half goals from Jay Simpson and Nacer Barazite ensured Arsenal took control and avoided defeat against their Coca-Cola League Two opponents.

Gael Clichy started off as captain in a team that was lacking first-team stars, but summer signing Aaron Ramsey was handed his debut for the North London side. It took them time to get their flowing game going.

Then on 37 minutes, good link-up play from Theo Walcott and Armand Traore found Bendtner, who came close with their first real effort of the match.

The hosts had a number of chances to extend their lead, but each of their shots lacked the venom needed to beat Almunia.

Walcott brought a diving save from Beckwith after he found enough space in which to fire off a right-footed effort. That ambitious strike was the last chance they had of the first-half.

Ramsey was the real bright spark for The Gunners. The former Cardiff City player was constantly looking to recieve the ball and make space for his team-mates, while his passing was direct, measured, and productive.

Arsene Wenger decided to change the entire starting eleven for the second period, so that meant that even more first-team debuts were dished out to a batch of promising youngsters.

Jack Wilshire, Gavin Hoyte, Simpson, and latest recruit Francis Coquelin all stood out, while Mark Randall, who took over the captain's armband, was excellent in centre midfield.

On the hour mark, Randall tried his luck with a free-kick that Harrison put out for a corner. From that resulting set-piece, Barazite blasted a shot just wide.

Simpson then fired Arsenal back into the game on 63 minutes when Wilshire played a slick pass into his fellow attacker and he wasted no time in picking out his spot with a good finish.

Rui Fonte almost got their second after pouncing on a scramble in the Barnet box, but his right-footed shot flew over the bar. It was a decent chance that the striker made for himself.

Within seconds of coming on for Barnet, Luke Medley latched onto a through ball and was in behind the away team's defence. However, just as he attempted to get his shot off Paul Rodgers came across and he screwed the effort off-target.

The game was then wrapped up when Wilshire again proved to be the creator as he played Simpson in and he passed in behind the last defender for Barazite to score on 73 minutes.

Wenger will be happy to have come away with the win and had an opportunity to see how many young players in action. He will be particularly pleased with Ramsey, Wilshire, and Simpson.
