Gallas back but Fabregas takes over Arsenal captaincy
Written by: AFP
2008-11-24 14:40:05
William Gallas, seen here in October 2008, will play for Arsenal against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday but manager Arsene Wenger said the captaincy had now passed permanently to Cesc Fabregas.
LONDON (AFP) - William Gallas will play for Arsenal against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday but manager Arsene Wenger said the captaincy had now passed permanently to Cesc Fabregas.
France defender Gallas was stripped of the club captaincy, fined two weeks' wages and dropped from the squad that lost 3-0 at Manchester City last weekend, the north London club's third defeat in four Premier League games, after publicly criticising his team-mates.
Wenger's decision to restore Gallas to the team just three days after sending the centre-back into exile was due in part to Arsenal's woeful defensive showing at Eastlands on Saturday.
After three defeats in four matches the Gunners cannot afford another loss on Tuesday, so Wenger has little choice but to turn back to his most talented defender.
But handing the captain's armband to Fabregas showed that he wasn't prepared to let Gallas get away with his rant without a substantial punishment.
"He (Gallas) will play against Kiev. The captain will be Fabregas. It is a permanent thing," Wenger said at a press conference ahead of the Dynamo match."
Despite Gallas's demotion, Wenger insisted he hadn't lost respect for Gallas after his outburst and claimed the player still has a future at the club.
"William is a player that I rate and a man I rate," Wenger said. "I have a big respect for him. He was working as captain in a very difficult media environment.
"He was under big pressure from the press and at some stage you do not want that high pressure to affect him or the team. But for the man and player I have a big respect.
"I cannot stop suggestions. For me he is a player who is committed to the club and can be even stronger as a player.
"He took all the problems of the team to his heart. It can be a new start for him and make him stronger."
Fabregas, 21, is only a few months older than Tony Adams was when he became Arsenal's youngest skipper in the 1980s.
But the Spanish midfielder has already become a strong voice in the Arsenal dressing room and made his desire to be captain clear in pre-season, so Wenger has no concerns about his ability to do the job at such a tender age.
"He is one of the leaders of the team but I don't believe in one man who sorts out all the problems," Wenger said.
"A successful team sorts out everything together. It is important to share that leadership in the dressing room.
"I believe personally for me the captain is the voice of the club towards the outside.
"To be a top player in a top club you need to be mentally very strong and that means you have to be able to deal with that sort of situation."
Things are never easy for Wenger however. With the captaincy situation resolved, he then discovered he will be without French midfielders Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby against Dynamo after the duo suffered injuries in training on Monday.
Well i'am glad that Galls is not capitan anymore, but yes Azafargunner i think it would have been better if Toure taked the arm band

I hope that Fabregas will make a good captain, even he's still young but he is an influential asset to the team.
the Boss has decided that, we hope so that is was a good decision.
I do agree with Fabregas as the captain even though my eyes are looking more towards Toure.
Yes lets support our new captain. come on Fabregas, you can do it!
GO ARSENAL GO!

I think he is. Maybe this is the push he needed to rise.
Still, my favourite player is Samir Nasri (of course, I know he couldn't be our captain).

I am not decided yet on whether this is a good move or not. The reason is simple, Fabregas is young. He has been distracted this season by the transfer rumours and also Spain's long run in the European final.
Toure would have been a better choice. Add to the fact that if this is permanent, will Toure be happy because he is the vice-captain for so long?
I hope the team stay focus and build a better team spirit. Come Jan, we need to do a bit of transfers to stabilise the young team.
Good Luck to Fabregas. Welcome, our new captain. Hope you stay focus.
Go Gunners!!!

Fabregas revealed to Arsenal's official website that it is a "great honour" to be given the armband.
"It is a great honour for me to captain one of the biggest clubs in the world," Fabregas said.
"It is a proud moment," he added. "I know it's a big responsibility but together with my team-mates I know we have the spirit and commitment to get back to winning ways and fulfil our potential."

Yes..this is something I have been waiting for to happen. The armband goes to Fabregas at last. This definitely will bring back the old fabregas that possess a great vision, deadly passes & his skills to spearhead the young team.
The most important thing is he is likeable among his team-mates.Most of his team-mates are glad he is chosen.
Guys, very soon..we are back to the winning form.
Go Gunners..........!!!

Cesc: Arsenal captaincy ends all Barcelona return talk
25.11.08 | tribalfootball.com
Cesc Fabregas says being named Arsenal club captain should end all doubts over his future.
Fabregas told The Sun: “By becoming captain it shows how much I’m committed to the club.
“I actually feel I’ve shown commitment since I arrived here.”
Fab has constantly been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. But the Spain ace reckons he will be a Gunner for years to come.
He added: “Each year people talk about me leaving yet I’m still here and I want to be part of the future of Arsenal.
“I love the club and I’m totally committed to it. I’m not looking to play anywhere else.
“Of course, the future for Arsenal is bright. The players are very much looking forward to the next few years.”
Manager Arsene Wenger said: “I have never doubted Cesc’s commitment and that was one of the reasons for making him captain.
“It’s important you are the voice of the club to the outside and your commitment is not questioned.
“Cesc has the leadership qualities, the experience and the confidence of the other players.”
