Will Arsenal fans forgive him?
A question to ponder this weekend is whether Emmanuel Adebayor is beginning to feel just a tad uncomfortable. One hesitates to say it, but might he even be feeling a wee bit foolish?
After all, with Barcelona’s signing of Ade’s erstwhile team-mate Alexander Hleb, and AC Milan’s capture of Barca’s Ronaldinho, you might conclude that Adebayor is running out of suitors.
Milan’s general manager, Adriano Galliani, added insult to the Togo international’s bruised feelings by rationalising the Rossoneri’s signing of Ronaldinho thus:
“He is a player with great media impact, whereas Adebayor is not. These characters elevate the interest towards our League on behalf of the media, help fill the stadiums and certainly make the challenges more interesting.”
Which was another way of saying that although Ade might be younger, faster and fitter than Ronnie these days, the Brazilian wins hands down in the charisma stakes and, more importantly, will sell zillions more replica shirts.
Adebayor recently said he would only stay at Arsenal if the club paid him as much as they paid Thierry Henry, on the basis that he is Henry‘s successor in the team. Clearly, though, the Togolese has a long way to go before the fans will regard him as anywhere close to the Frenchman as a player or a man.
If he is indeed still an Arsenal player next season, he may well find some of the fans lukewarm if not positively hostile towards him. And unless he uses that as a cynical pretext for getting his way and being subsequently offloaded as damaged goods, Adebayor needs to focus on his football and winning back the support of those fans. Otherwise this summer will be seen as an embarrassing own goal in his career.
